Local fallen Iraqi war heroes honored

Augusta County has lost three young Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Two will now be remembered with permanent memorials on interstate overpasses.

The Rt. 608 bridge over I-64 in Fishersville will be named for Lance Cpl. Jason Redifer who was 19 when he was killed in Iraq in 2005. Jason grew up on Twin Spring Farm located a short way down Rt. 608 from the bridge.

In the northern end of Augusta County the Weyers Cave Road bridge over I-81 will be named for Lance Cpl. Daniel Bubb, also 19 when killed in Iraq in October of 2005. Daniel grew up in Grottoes.

The process to name the bridges began before the latest war casualty. Lance Cpl. Daniel Morris, 19, of Augusta County was killed in Iraq February 14, 2007. A resolution was passed during the just-finished General Assembly session celebrating his life.

Plaques should in be place by July. I can think of only one more thing to complete the tribute to these young men: an American flag located on the overpasses along with the plaque. I suppose the logistics of dealing with that would be more than VDOT would want to undertake but how stirring a sight it would be to drive under those bridges and see an American flag snapping in the breeze.
