Staunton National Guard unit placed on alert

Our local military folks at the Staunton National Guard Armory have been placed on alert for possible deployment to Iraq or elsewhere around the world. Involving 150 soldiers, the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Unit continues to train while waiting for orders. At the present time there is no indication of when or where they may go.

This is the first time the 116th has been put on alert since the start of the war in Iraq. The Unit, led by Executive Director Lieutenant Colonel William Coffin, is ready to leave when orders are received.

Check NBC-29 coverage for more on this story.
